The Nova Scotia Physician Stream is designed to assist the Nova Scotia Health Authority (NSHA) and Izaak Walton Killam Health Centre (IWK) in recruiting and retaining general practitioners, family physicians, and specialist physicians with the relevant professional skills to work and reside in Nova Scotia on a long-term basis.

The program's requirements for applicants include:

  • Being a general practitioner/family physician (NOC 31102, Class 1) or specialist physician (NOC 31100 and NOC 31101, Class 1).
  • Having a contract with the Nova Scotia Health Authority (NSHA) or IWK Health Centre, with the contract details reflected on official NSHA or IWK letterhead. This includes the signature and date of the person authorized to employ qualified physicians by NSHA or IWK, the signature and date of the employee, proof of eligibility for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia, and proof of eligibility to apply for privileges and certificates with NSHA and IWK.

In addition to this program, physician immigrants who meet specific criteria also have the opportunity to enter the federal Express Entry system through the Nova Scotia Labour Market Priorities - Physician stream, which is by invitation only. Applicants under this fast-track stream must submit an agreement letter confirming their intention to work and live in Nova Scotia for at least 2 years to the Nova Scotia Department of Health and Wellness.
